TWO LIONS OF JUDAH

HANUKKAH MENORAH

This Hanukkiah was likely crafted by the Jewish immigrant metal-smiths on New York's Lower East Side. Here we find two lions of Judah supporting a Temple Menorah, Torah Crown, and topped with a Star of David.

 

An identical piece is held in the United States Holocaust Memorial Museum Collection in Washington D.C.

The lion of Judah is one of the national symbols of the Jewish People, connected to the Tribe of Judah, King David and the Messiah. Over the centuries, we often find the lion displayed in Jewish art to signify divine power, communal protection, and the salvation of Israel.

Reuven Rubin (1893-1974) is considered one of the most renowned and famous Israeli artists worldwide with works in collections of leading museums such as MoMA (New York), Musee d’art Moderne (Paris), Jewish Museum (New York) and others. He was born in Romania in 1893 and immigrated to Israel in 1912, settling in Jerusalem. A year after he traveled to Paris to study at Ecole Des Beaux-Art, finally returning to Israel to begin a lifelong career depicting his lens on Israel and the Bible. Rubin’s work sings with the joy of living in a country drenched with sun, blossoming flowers, luscious fruits and in silver foliage of an age-old tree. Rubin identified with the biblical essence of Israel, with its people and pioneering land. In his language of imagery he told us biblical parables in a magical and extraordinary way. Before us is Rubin's depiction of King David playing his lyre, surrounded by myriads of shofar blowing attendants inside the Jerusalem city walls.

The Balfour Declaration was issued in 1917, pledging the British government's support for the establishment of a Jewish National Home with the Jews sovereign in Eretz Yisrael. This copper platter honors that historic date, highlighting the Israeli Parliament Knesset building with the words "A National Home for the Jewish People- 1917-1977", with a central hole for display mounting. Surrounding the inner roundel is a beautifully decorated Star of David with intricate Temple menorahs.

BALFOUR DECLARATION DAY POSTER

It is no exaggeration that the history of Israel has turned on the seminal Balfour Declaration of November 2nd 1917. The Declaration was the fruit of twelve months’ negotiations between a group of British Zionist leaders and British government officials. For many, political support for the Jewish State came from the Biblical prophesy of the return of the Jews to Zion. The Declaration was contained in a letter dated 2 November 1917 from the United Kingdom's Foreign Secretary Arthur Balfour to Lord Rothschild, a leader of the British Jewish community, for transmission to the Zionist Federation led by Chaim Weizmann.

This impactful poster designed in early 20th Century Hebrew script is bordered with Stars of David. This item speaks to the respect that the Jewish residents of Jerusalem had for Lord Balfour and the support of those like-minded benefactors of the rebirth of Israel in the British Parliament.

This hand-crafted flag, sewn during the earliest days of the creation of the state, pays homage to the sacrifices of Israel’s founding Zionists. This flag reminds us all that the Jewish People, wherever they may be, are  united by the idea and ideals for which Israel so staunchly stands.
