THEODOR HERZL HAND-CRAFTED WALL CARPET
FAMED IMAGE OF ZIONISM'S FOUNDER
EARLY 20TH CENTURY, JERUSALEM

Herzl spent most of his adult life giving to the cause of Israel. This hand-crafted orientalist carpet with a portrait of Theodor Herzl was created a century ago at the weaving workshop of the nonprofit Alliance Israélite Universelle School in Jerusalem. In its center, Herzl is seen in his famous pose leaning on the Basel Switzerland balcony, gazing at a procession of Jewish exiles making Aliyah. The walls of Jerusalem and the Tower of David grace the background above a blazing menorah shining the light of Zionism to Jews worldwide. The Alliance Israélite Universelle was founded in Paris in 1860 to improve the welfare of Jews in the Land of Israel and around the world. In 1882 the Alliance opened a trade-school in Jerusalem to provide young men - and in 1884 young women - from low-income families with vocational training in carpentry, blacksmithing, metal-founding, wood and stone carving as well as sewing, embroidery, dressmaking and carpet-weaving.

DER JUDENSTAAT // THE JEWISH STATE
FIRST AMERICAN YIDDISH PRINTING
1917, UNITED STATES OF AMERICA

This historic book is the first American Yiddish printing of Theodor Herzl's Zionist manifesto "Der Judenstaat" ("The Jewish State"). The cover of this rare 94 page edition features a striking image of the author under the Zionist and American flags. Translated anonymously, this landmark work is considered the first U.S. translation and publication into Yiddish of the full text (and not just a portion or highlights). Although the cover has edges in frayed condition, we can not over state how important and impactful this book was on the early Zionist movement.

In this essay, Theodor Herzl presents the main points of his understanding of the "Jewish problem" and its solution. He suggests a plan for the organization and establishment of a longed-for Jewish state. In the theoretical section of the essay, he proves that the Jewish nation is indeed a national entity, and he discusses the failure of the Emancipation and the inevitable rise of anti-semitism. He expects that the nations of the world will no longer tolerate the Jewish nation within them because of their religious and spiritual differences. According to Herzl, only a political solution that will lead to the concentration of the Jewish nation within her own sovereign territory, with the backing of the cultured nations of the world will solve the affliction of the Jewish People.

THEODOR HERZL TYPED LETTER
HAND-SIGNED AUTOGRAPH
MARCH 6 1902, VIENNA, AUSTRIA

This watermarked letter from the Executive Committee of the Zionist Congress in Vienna is hand-signed by Theodor Herzl himself as Chairman and head of the "Funfer-Ausschuss" ("Committee of Five"). Herzl starts by addressing his "Very honorable colleague" and ends the letter with "Hochachtungsvoll mit Zionsgruss" ("Sincerely Yours with Zion's Greetings"). Incredibly, this letter references Johann Kremenezky, an industrialist, electrical engineer, and co-founder of the Jewish National Fund with Herzl, becoming its first Chairman. The letter also discusses Joel Weil, a close associate of Herzl from the famed Basel Switzerland, where the first Zionist Congress was held five years prior. 1902 was a significant year for Herzl as he published "Altneuland" ("The Old New Land"), which expanded on Herzl's vision for a Jewish return to the Land of Israel.

1917, UNITED STATES OF AMERICA

Printed in English and Hebrew by the Hebrew Publishing Company for piano, this beautifully designed five page sheet music folio is one of the earliest musical printings of "Hatikvah". "The Hope" is a 19th-century Jewish poem and today's national anthem of Israel. The theme of the romantic composition reflects the Jews' 2,000-year-old hope of returning to the Land of Israel, restoring it, and reclaiming it as a free and sovereign nation. Its lyrics are adapted from a poem by Naftali Herz Imber. On the cover is a portrait of Theodor Herzl, with Hebrew, English and Yiddish song lyrics on the back cover.
“O while within a Jewish breast
Beats true a Jewish heart,
And Jewish glances turning East
To Zion fondly dart"

CHAIM WEIZMANN & PRESIDENT HARRY TRUMAN
GIFTING A TORAH, HISTORIC ARCHIVAL PHOTOGRAPH
MAY 25 1948, UNITED STATES OF AMERICA

This original historic photograph was housed for decades in the archives of the Associated Press in London. It captures a touching moment in Zionist history, when Chaim Weizmann, who just became Israel's first President, met then U.S. President Harry Truman at the White House. Weizmann spent most of his adult life giving to the cause of Israel. Weizmann had met with Truman months earlier, hoping to sway America's favor in supporting the Zionist dream. President Truman was enormously impressed with Weizmann, and promised him that if the Jews proclaimed a state when the British left Palestine on May 14, he would recognize it immediately. A week after Israel was established, Weizmann gifted the American people a Torah scroll as a gesture of gratitude for that support. The Torah had originally been gifted by eminent New York Rabbi Louis Finkelstein to his son for his bar mitzvah, but was then entrusted to Weizmann for this holy diplomatic purpose. The Truman Torah, as it is now called, resides at the Truman Library in Missouri.

DAVID BEN-GURION TO CHAIM WEIZMANN
HISTORIC WWII ERA JEWISH AGENCY TELEGRAM
OCTOBER 19 1942, NEW YORK

This original historic telegram was sent from the Executive of The Jewish Agency for Palestine to Chaim Weizmann, who would eventually become Israel's first President. In May 1942, the Weizmann convened a meeting of leading Zionists in New York pressing for a policy of unrestricted immigration into Palestine in light of the horrors inflicted on the Jewish community of Europe. Weizmann heralded that a Jewish Commonwealth needed to be established, helping to prompt Churchill to give his backing for the founding of the State of Israel. At this time, David Ben-Gurion, who spent most of his adult life giving to the cause of Israel, served as the Chairman of the Jewish Agency's Executive Committee. In the years before the founding of the state, the Jewish Agency oversaw the establishment of about 1,000 towns and villages in Mandate Palestine.
When World War II broke out, the Jewish Agency established a committee to aid European Jewry by finding them entry permits to Palestine, sending them food, and maintaining contact. The Agency also helped recruit 40,000 members of the Palestinian Jewish community to be trained by the British military and aid in the Allies' struggle against the Nazis

INDEPENDENT STATE OF ISRAEL
MAY 14 1948, TEL AVIV

This historic archival photograph captures one of the most important moments in Jewish history, David Ben-Gurion publicly proclaiming the Declaration of the Establishment of the State of Israel. The ceremony was held in the Tel Aviv Museum (today known as Independence Hall) but was not widely publicized as it was feared that the British authorities might attempt to prevent it or that the Arab armies might invade earlier than expected. The event started at 4pm (a time chosen so as not to break Shabbat) and was broadcast live as the first transmission of the new radio station Kol Yisrael.

EARLY HAND-CRAFTED FLAG
STATE OF ISRAEL
MID-20TH CENTURY

We love seeing these retired old flags honored in style when framed prominently on the wall. Nothing compares to the pride one feels when knowing that the star and stripes of Israel’s blue and white flag had a long life fluttering in the breeze. More than a state, Israel is a people, a faith and a light unto the nations. In less than a century, Israel’s flag has become an iconic representation of the painful past, prodigious present and fantastic future of the Jewish People - at home and abroad.
This hand-crafted flag, sewn during the earliest days of the creation of the state, pays homage to the sacrifices of Israel’s founding Zionists. These pioneers secured the miracle of modern statehood for generations to come. This flag reminds us all that the Jewish People, wherever they may be, are united by the idea and ideals for which Israel so staunchly stands.
